Chion-in was established in 1234 by Honen’s pupils. On the huge grounds, you’ll be surprised by looking at huge wooden buildings including Sanmon entrance gate, Mieido big hall, Great Bell Tower, and so on.
Sanmon gate, 24 meters in height and 50 meters in width, is one of the largest wooden tower gates in Japan.
Honen is a founder of Jodo-shu, one of Buddhist sects.
People believed that the teachings of Jodo-shu was thought to heal them from suffering by just reciting the sutra of “Namu Ami Dabutsu” which literally means that I believe Amida Buddha.
Chion-in also has the Nightingale Hallway, which is connected to great wooden buildings. Its hallway creates unique sound when you walk through it.
